Champions Trophy: Mark Wood returns after suffering knee injury
What's the story
England's fast bowler Mark Wood was forced leave the field after suffering a suspected left knee injury during England's crucial ICC Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan in at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium
The discomfort was evident in Wood's fourth over of the match, in the first powerplay, after Afghanistan elected to bat first.
Wood, who has been clocking over 150kph regularly, bas back in the 34th over.
Medical intervention
Wood signaled for medical assistance mid-over
Wood called for medical attention after bowling his fourth delivery of his fourth over to Ibrahim Zadran.
He was then spotted lying on his back in the outfield as a physiotherapist assessed his heavily strapped left knee.
Despite the pain, Wood completed his over with a 147km/h length ball which Zadran defended for no run.
Team impact
Wood's exit leaves England a bowler short
Following his over, Wood walked off the field and was replaced by substitute fielder Tom Banton. This left England a bowler short for their innings.
The team had earlier decided to go with an extra batter in their ODI line-up for this match, depending on three fast bowlers and Adil Rashid as their main bowlers.
In Wood's absence, the fifth bowler's duties were shared between Joe Root and Liam Livingstone.
Injury record
Wood's injury history and return to cricket
This isn't Wood's first brush with injuries. He missed England's Test winter after fracturing his right elbow.
He also had knee issues in the past, having undergone surgery on it in 2019 and missing the T20I series against Pakistan last year due to an injury in the same region.
However, Wood returned for England's white-ball series in India ahead of the Champions Trophy.
