Ian Healy backs Boland over Josh Hazlewood in Test cricket
What's the story
Former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy has backed Scott Boland as a better option than Josh Hazlewood in the Aussies' Test pace-attack.
Healy's backing comes after Boland's phenomenal performance against India in the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Boland, who had replaced an injured Hazlewood in the series picked up a stunning 21 wickets at an average of 13.19 in three Tests.
Fitness concerns
Healy highlights Hazlewood's recurring injuries
Despite Hazlewood's phenomenal record of six wickets at an average of 13.16 in his few appearances, Healy has expressed concerns over his frequent injuries.
On SENQ Breakfast, Healy praised Hazlewood's talent but stressed on Boland's dependability due to lesser absences.
"The thing with Josh is, you just can't afford to miss as many games as he is doing," said Healy, adding Hazlewood has played only 16 out of Australia's last 34 Tests.
Rising star
Boland's debut and performance
Boland's sensational Test debut in the 2021/22 Ashes series has made him Australia's fourth seamer whenever the injuries hit.
Meanwhile, his relentless accuracy and ability to extract bounce and seam movement have worked wonders on bouncy Australian and English wickets.
These traits could work in his favor for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa at Lord's in June if Hazlewood's fitness remains a concern.
Strategic approach
Healy suggests 'horses for courses' policy
Healy has also proposed a smart strategy for Australia's Test team, saying Boland and Hazlewood could be swapped depending on conditions.
He feels Boland could do wonders at home and in England in seam-friendly conditions, while Hazlewood could be more useful in varied overseas conditions.
"Scott Boland you might play over him in certain conditions," said Healy, hinting at Australia's fast bowlers' selection strategy.
He further added stating, "You might be 'horses for courses' with Scotty Boland forever."
