Novak Djokovic gears up for 2024 Shanghai Masters
Novak Djokovic, the four-time Shanghai Masters champion, has returned to China after a five-year hiatus. The 37-year-old tennis star expressed his excitement about participating in the Shanghai tournament during an interview with ATP Media. "I wanted to play in China... I said, 'Okay, I need to play the tournament in Shanghai, it's the biggest event in China and one of the great 1000 events we have on Tour.' I missed being in China," he stated. Here's more.
Djokovic acknowledges support from Chinese fans
Djokovic acknowledged the unwavering support he has received from his Chinese fan base over the years. He noted that some fans had been urging him to return and compete in China. "I met some of them on the Tour the last couple of years and they were asking me in a way, 'You need to come back to China and play!' So I'm happy that I'm here, I really am," he said.
Djokovic's impressive record at Shanghai tournament
Djokovic holds an impressive record at the Shanghai tournament, with the most wins (34) and titles (2012-13, 2015, 2018) in its history. As he prepares for his upcoming matches against home favorite Buyunchaokete or #NextGenATP Alex Michelsen, Djokovic is also on the brink of a significant milestone. If successful, he could become only the third man in the Open Era to secure 100 tour-level titles and surpass Roger Federer's record for most titles on hard courts (71).
Djokovic's cultural immersion and fashion exploration in China
Before the tournament, Djokovic immersed himself in Chinese culture by visiting Beijing and the Great Wall of China. He also participated in a special event organized by Lacoste at the Ju Yong Guan pass, where he played tennis with Chinese actor Wang Yibo. During his visit, Djokovic was spotted wearing a bright green tracksuit while exploring Beijing, a departure from his usual conservative off-court attire. "I'm enjoying the new style to be honest," he said.
