England all-rounders to register hundred and fifer in a Test
England cricket team pacer Gus Atkinson helped his side trounce Sri Lanka by 190 runs in the 2nd Test at Lord's. After scoring a rapid century in England's first innings score of 427, Atkinson scalped a fifer in the last innings as the hosts won the duel by 190 runs. Here we look at the England players with a hundred and fifer in Tests.
Atkinson's stellar show at Lord's
Atkinson claimed 5/62 in Sri Lanka's chase. He bowled 16 overs (4 maidens). His brilliance meant the Lankans were folded for 292 and lost the game by 190 runs. Meanwhile, the dasher got to his maiden Test ton on Day 2. Atkinson managed 118 from 115 balls, striking at 102.61. He smashed 14 fours and four sixes.
Tony Greig: First Englishman with this feat
Meanwhile, former all-rounder Tony Greig was the first England all-rounder with this iconic double. It was the 1994 Bridgetown Test against West Indies and Greig made a sensational 320-ball 148 in the first innings. His efforts at number six powered England's total to 295. The pacer was also the pick of the England bowlers in the second innings, claiming 6/164 in 46 overs.
Ian Botham accomplished this feat five times
Meanwhile, there were five instances where the legendary Ian Botham accomplished this landmark. His first double came in the 1978 Christchurch Test against NZ as he made 103 in the first innings before scalping 5/73. Later that year, Botham registered 108 & 8/34 as England beat Pakistan in the Lord's Test.
Here are the other instances
In 1980, Botham registered twin fifers (6/58 and 7/48) in the Mumbai Test against India besides playing a 114-run knock. It was the 1981 Leeds Test against Australia and Botham scored a sensational 149* after England were asked to follow on. He also claimed 6/95 as England triumphed eventually. The England talisman registered 5/59 and 138 in the 1984 Wellington Test against New Zealand.
