US Open: Djokovic wins his 10th Grand Slam
The world no.1 Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer after four enthralling sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 at the Aurthur Ashe Stadium in the final of US Open 2015. The victory was Novak's second U.S. Open singles title and 10th Grand Slam singles title. Djokovic shared his admiration for Federer; he said it was an incredible season, having won 3 Grand Slams in 2015.
US Open Introduction
US Open Tennis Championships is a hardcourt tennis tournament which began in 1881 as the US National Championship. US Open was played on grass till 1974 and on clay from 1975-77. US Open is organized by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), a not-for-profit organization. It is the only major that employs tiebreakers in every set of the match, including the deciding set.
Equal prize money
In 1973, the US Open became the first Grand Slam tournament to award equal prize money to men and women with that year's singles champions John Newcombe and Margaret Court both receiving $25,000 each.
Upsets of 2015 US Open
The 2015 season of US Open saw many of the top players bow out early on in the tournament. Women's singles saw the loss of top players like Ana Ivanovic, Wozniacki, Safarova and Muguruza within first two rounds. In men's singles, Nishikori lost in the first round, Nadal in the third round and Murray was stunned by Kevin Anderson in the pre-quarterfinal match.
Hits of the season
2015 US Open season saw some players who surprised, thrilled the audience and went on to shine in the tournament. The dark horses included likes of Feliciano Lopez and Kevin Anderson who reached till quarterfinals in the men's singles. Players like Benoit Paire and Donald Young, Chardy made quite an impression. In the women's singles Roberta Vinci, Flavia Pennetta, Mladenovic, etc. made big wins.
Semi Final matches
The women's singles semifinals saw major upsets where two top seeds were taken down. This included Roberta Vinci's shocking win over Serena Williams in a three setter and Flavia Pennetta's victory over Simona Halep. Serena's loss ended her bid for a calendar Grand Slam. Men's Singles Semis had Djokovic beating the defending US Open champion Marin Cilic and Federer defeating his compatriot Stan Wawrinka.
An all-Italian Women's final
The top Italian doubles players and childhood friends, Flavia Pennetta and Roberta Vinci faced off against each another in the women's singles final at the flushing meadows. Pennetta came on top defeating Vinci in straight sets 7-6, 6-2. Winning her first ever Grand Slam title at the age of 33, Pennetta announced her decision to retire at the end of the year.
Double delight for India
After the recent victories in Wimbledon, Mirza-Hingis and Paes-Hingis won yet again, at the US Open. While this was a third Grand Slam this year for Leander Paes- Martina Hingis duo, it is a second for the Sania Mirza- Martina Hingis pair. Pae/Hingis defeated Mattek Sands/Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6,10-7 in the mixed doubles final. Sania/Hingis easily beat Dellaqua/Shvedova 6-3,6-3 the in women's doubles final.
Most Grand Slam wins in men's singles
With 17 major titles, Roger Federer sits at the top of the lot followed by Pete Sampras and Rafael Nadal with 14; Roy Emerson with 12; Rod Laver and Gjorn Borg with 11; Bill Tilden and Novak Djokovic with 10 Grand Slam titles.
