India tour of Windies 2016
The 'India tour of West Indies' was scheduled to include two practice matches and four Tests. The Test matches were to be played from 21 July to 22 August, 2016. The first Test, played in Antigua, began on 21st July and concluded on the 25th.
1st day of 1st Test
India won the toss and skipper Virat Kohli chose to bat first. Kohli scored an unbeaten 143, making it his 12th Test century. He is now the 3rd Indian captain (apart from Dravid and Kapil Dev) to score a 100 in Caribbean Tests. He also reached the 3000-run milestone in Test cricket. India stood at 302/4 at the end of day 1.
A Kohli show yet again on Day 2
India ended their first innings by posting a huge total of 566/8. Day 2 belonged to Virat Kohli and R Ashwin. Kohli registered his first-ever double century in Tests (200 of 283 deliveries). This was followed up by R Ashwin who scored the match's only other century, 113 off 253 balls. West Indies began their first innings and ended the day with 31/1.
Kohli's double ton feat
Kohli's historic double ton is the highest scored by any Indian captain, outside of India (previous record was Azharuddin's 192 in New Zealand, in 1990). He is also the youngest skipper to score a Test 200 in the Caribbean.
India forces a follow-on
West Indies stood 243 all-out, at the end of first innings. India enforced a follow-on, which was the 6th time Windies were asked to do so by India. Playing 2nd innings, WI scored 21/1 by the end of play on Day 3. Shami and Umesh Yadav delivered for India, taking 4 wickets each. Shami joined pacer Venkatesh Prasad to achieve the fastest 50 wickets.
Only 3 players with a century, 7-wickets haul
Apart from Ashwin only 2 players have scored a 100 and taken 7 wickets, in the same test match. This includes - Ian Botham, in 1978 and 1979-80, against Pakistan and India respectively; and Jack Gregory in 1920-21 against England.
