Presenting highest successful Test run-chases by Asian teams in England
Sri Lanka beat England in the third and final Test at the Kennington Oval in London. The Lankans claimed their maiden Test win against England in over a decade. The visitors earned a famous win on Day 4 after chasing down 219. Pathum Nissanka scored a ton for them. This is now the highest successful Test run-chase by an Asian team in England.
Pakistan: 180 vs Australia, Headingley, 2010
Pakistan claimed a historic win against Australia during the 2010 Test series held in England (due to logistical challenges). They beat the Aussies by three wickets after chasing down 180 at Headingley, Leeds. Interestingly, no other Asian side has chased down 180+ runs in Tests in the nation. Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir starred for Pakistan with spells worth 3/20 and 4/86.
Pakistan: 148 vs England, The Oval, 2010
A month later, Pakistan defeated England in a similar manner on the same tour. They chased down 148 to win the Oval Test. Amir shone here as well, recording a crucial fifer in the second innings.
India: 173 vs England, The Oval, 1971
The previous-highest successful run-chase at The Oval was 173 by India against hosts England in 1971. This was also India's first-ever victory in England in Test cricket. Ajit Wadekar led India from the front with 40+ scores in both the innings. Bhagwath Chandrasekhar took six wickets for India as they bowled England out for 101 in the second innings.
Sri Lanka: 219 vs England, The Oval, 2024
As mentioned, Sri Lanka are now the only Asian side to have chased down more than 200 runs in Tests in England. As per Cricbuzz, this also marked SL's second successful 200-plus run-chase in Tests outside the subcontinent.
