A look at highest Powerplay totals in IPL finals
Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad to claim their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title on May 26. The Knight Riders successfully chased down 114 in what was a one-sided final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Notably, KKR scored 72/1 in the first six overs, now the highest Powerplay score in IPL finals. Here are the top four such Powerplay totals.
72/1: KKR vs SRH, Chennai, 2024
KKR came out all guns blazing after bowling out SRH for 113, the lowest-ever total in an IPL final. KKR lost Sunil Narine early, but Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer took them past 100. The Knight Riders were 72/1 after six overs, now the highest Powerplay total in IPL finals. They are the first side with over 70 runs in this regard.
62/0: GT vs CSK, Ahmedabad, 2023
Before this match, Gujarat Titans held the record for the highest Powerplay total in IPL finals. The Titans slammed 62/0 in the 2023 IPL final against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad. Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha took on the CSK bowling attack in the first six overs. GT eventually lost the final after CSK chased down a revised 171-run target in 15 overs (DLS).
61/1: MI vs CSK, Kolkata, 2015
Mumbai Indians scored 61/1 in the Powerplay during the 2015 IPL final against Chennai Super Kings in Kolkata. They lost Parthiv Patel for just one run after being put in to bat. However, Lendl Simmons and Rohit Sharma powered MI thereafter. As a result, MI racked up 202/5 before restricting CSK to 161/8. The former won their second IPL title.
61/1: MI vs DC, Dubai, 2020
MI had a similar start against Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2020 final in Dubai. They scored 61/1 in the Powerplay while chasing a modest 157. MI collected 18 runs in the second over bowled by Kagiso Rabada as Quinton de Kock smashed 3 fours and a six. De Kock departed thereafter, but Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit were rampant. MI won by five wickets.
