T20 World Cup: Presenting Sri Lanka's highest individual scorers
Sri Lanka will be raring to have a solid show in the 2024 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup. In addition to their title win in 2024, the Lankans have been two-time runners-up across eight editions. Many SL batters have made their bat talk in the gala event. Here are the Lankan batters with the highest individual scores in T20 WC history.
Mahela Jayawardene - 89 versus England, 2014
Mahela Jayawardene was his destructive best against England in the 2014 T20 WC match in Chattogram. He arrived at number three after Kusal Perera's early departure. While he took a few balls to get his eyes in, he found boundaries for fun thereafter. Jayawardene ended up scoring 89 off 51 balls (11 fours, 3 sixes). Though he powered SL to 189/4, England prevailed eventually.
Tillakaratne Dilshan - 96* versus West Indies, 2009
Tillakaratne Dilshan owns the highest individual score in the semi-final of the T20 WC history. The opener was brilliant in the knock-out clash against West Indies in the 2009 event. Dilshan paced his innings to perfection at the Oval as he scored 96* off 57 balls with the help of 12 fours and two sixes. SL posted 158/5 and later won by 57 runs.
Mahela Jayawardene - 98* versus West Indies, 2010
Jayawardene starred in Sri Lanka's 57-run victory against hosts WI in the 2010 T20 World Cup match in Bridgetown. He opened the innings and put up a batting exhibition. Alongside Kumar Sangakkara (68), he added 166 runs for the second wicket, guiding SL to 195/3. Jayawardene remained unbeaten on 98 off 56 balls with the help of nine fours and four maximums.
Mahela Jayawardene - 100 versus Zimbabwe, 2010
Jayawardene also tops this list as he hammered a fine hundred against Zimbabwe at the Providence in the 2010 edition. While four of SL's top-six batters were dismissed in single digits, Jayawardene stood strong and made a breathtaking 100 off 64 balls (10 fours, 4 sixes). SL posted 173/7 and later won the run-curtailed game by 14 runs (DLS method).
