Decoding the highest 10th-wicket partnerships for Australia in ODIs
Australia's Alex Carey hammered a match-winning 67-ball 74 in the 2nd ODI against England at Headingley, Leeds on September 21. The visitors were reeling at 221/9 at one point. However, Carey's 49-run stand with Josh Hazlewood helped the Aussies post 270/10. The Men in Yellow later won by 68 runs. Here we look at Australia's highest 10th-wicket stands in ODI cricket.
63 - Watson & Bichel vs Sri Lanka, 2003
Chasing 344 against Sri Lanka in the 2003 Sydney ODI, Australia were reduced to 201/9. Shane Watson was then joined by Andy Bichel and the duo did well in reducing the margin of defeat. They added 63 runs for the final wicket as Australia finished at 264/10. While Watson, who batted at number nine, made a run-a-ball 35*, Bichel contributed with a 24-ball 28.
57* - Faulkner & McKay vs England, 2014
A dream finish from James Faulkner helped Australia chase down 301 in the 2014 Brisbane match against England. He joined Clint McKay with the scorecard reading 244/9. The duo then added 57* runs, out of which McKay scored just 2*. Faulkner returned unbeaten on 69 off 47 balls as Australia prevailed with three balls to spare.
54 - Stoinis & Hazlewood vs New Zealand, 2017
Marcus Stoinis played a freak innings versus New Zealand in the 2017 Auckland ODI. Chasing 287, the Aussies were reduced to 226/9 when Stoinis joined Hazlewood. The former didn't even let the number-11 batter come on strike even once. He went on to smoke an unbeaten 117-ball 146. However, Hazlewood's untimely run-out meant Australia (280/10) narrowly fell short by just six runs.
49 - Carey & Hazlewood vs England, 2024
Carey and Hazlewood added 49 runs for the final wicket in the recently-concluded Headingley game. The wicket-keeper did the bulk of the scoring as Hazlewood played the second fiddle, scoring 4* off 11 balls. Carey went berserk in the end overs as the visitors posted 270 batting first. As mentioned, the Australian southpaw was dismissed for 74 off 67 balls.
