The hosts sealed an important 26-run victory after England collapsed in pursuit of 290. Eoin Morgan's side lost their last six wickets for just 35 runs, as Sheldon Cottrell picked a five-for. How did the match pan out?
Chris Gayle got off to a slow start before hitting a 63-ball 50. Youngster Shimron Hetmyer slammed an unbeaten ton after the top order laid the foundation. England lost quick wickets before Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes hit fifties. But it wasn't enough.
Gayle smashes 50th ODI fifty
After a sparkling 135 in the first ODI, veteran Gayle smashed a fifty. He started off slowly once again, before hitting four sixes to get to his 50th career ODI fifty. Gayle has 1,357 ODI runs against England. The southpaw is just eight maximums away from registering 500 sixes in international cricket (492). The 39-year-old has amassed 9,912 runs in ODIs.
Hetmyer smashes fourth hundred, Cottrell takes maiden five-for
Hetmyer (104*) smashed his fourth career ODI hundred. He hit seven fours and four sixes. This was his debut ODI ton against England. Hetmyer now has 882 runs in ODIs. He needs another 128 to surpass the 1,000-run mark. Cottrell picked up his maiden five-for in ODI cricket (5/46). He now has the sixth-best bowling figures in ODIs between Windies and England.
England lose first ODI chasing under 350 since 2017
England lost their first ODI against West Indies in their last 12 ODIs (W 10, L 1 N/R 1). England have also lost an ODI while chasing less than 350 runs for the first time since 2017. Coming into this match, the number one ODI side had a win-loss record of 18-3 in chases since 2017. The three losses came while chasing 350+ totals.
Stokes surpasses 2,000 ODI runs
Morgan (70) smashed his 43rd career ODI fifty. All-rounder Ben Stokes (79) notched his 14th ODI fifty. He also went past the 2,000 run-mark in ODI cricket (2,062). Stokes surpassed England opener Jonny Bairstow (2,051 runs). Jason Holder (3/53) now has 117 ODI wickets. He went past Kemar Roach (114) and equalled former cricketer Ravi Rampaul (117).
