Here's why tennis star Alexander Zverev withdrew from China Open
Tennis men's singles world number two, Alexander Zverev, has withdrawn from the upcoming China Open due to health concerns. The German star recently disclosed that he has been diagnosed with pneumonia. This revelation came after a series of disappointing performances in recent tournaments, including losses at the US Open and Laver Cup. "Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, which explains the physical difficulties I've had in recent months," Zverev told Deutschen Presse-Agentur.
Recent performances and health priority
Zverev's health issues became evident during his recent tournaments. He suffered two consecutive defeats against American player Taylor Fritz, at the US Open quarter-final and his opening singles match at the Laver Cup. Despite these setbacks, Zverev managed to secure a victory for Team Europe at the Laver Cup by defeating Frances Tiafoe. "I have to take care of my health first so that I can compete again as soon as possible," he stated, emphasizing his need for recovery.
Zverev's withdrawal impacts ATP ranking and future tournaments
Zverev would have been the second seed at the China Open, however, his withdrawal was confirmed ahead of Tuesday's draw. Miomir Kecmanovic has replaced Zverev for the ATP 500 event in Beijing. "I am very disappointed that I had to withdraw from the China Open," Zverev expressed his regret over missing the tournament. His withdrawal will result in a loss of 170 ranking points post-tournament, potentially allowing Carlos Alcaraz, who trails him by 195 points, an opportunity to surpass him.
Uncertainty looms over Zverev's participation in Shanghai Masters
Zverev's next scheduled event is the Shanghai Masters, which begins on October 2. However, it remains uncertain whether he will be fit enough to participate in this ATP Masters 1000 event. Last year, he was eliminated in the second round by Roman Safiullin. Zverev now has 90 points to defend at both the Vienna Open and Paris Masters.
