Morne Morkel outlines his vision as India's new bowling coach
Morne Morkel, the newly appointed bowling coach for the Indian cricket team, has outlined his primary objective. He aims to safeguard and enhance an already efficient system. Former South African pacer Morkel joined the team in Chennai earlier as India prepare for their upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh. His appointment comes after Paras Mhambrey's departure last month. Here are further details.
Morkel's vision for Indian cricket
In a recent interview with bcci.tv, Morkel expressed his vision for the team. He stated, "Coming here, this is a set-up that operates by itself. To protect that and make it better in small ways is going to be the goal." He further emphasized the importance of supporting senior players who lead the charge and providing them with valuable advice.
Morkel's approach to player relationships and performance
Morkel highlighted the significance of establishing strong relationships with players to extract their best performance. He said, "It's one thing to have talent and skill but how can you make those guys feel welcome in an intimidating environment." He believes that once a player feels comfortable and like they belong, their performance will naturally improve.
Morkel's reaction to his appointment
Upon learning of his appointment as Team India's new bowling coach, Morkel shared the news with his father first. He described this moment as quite special for him. "I feel ready to take up this challenge. I understand and know that there will always be expectations of winning," he said, expressing confidence in facing the pressures associated with his new role.
Morkel's stint with the Pakistan cricket team
In April 2023, Morkel was roped in as Pakistan's bowling coach. The fast bowler joined the Pakistan side following the completion of the Indian Premier League 2023 season where he was a bowling coach of Lucknow Super Giants. In November 2023, Morkel resigned as Pakistan's bowling coach. This was after Pakistan exited the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup.
Morkel left Pakistan job for this reason
As per ESPNcricinfo, Morkel, who was contracted until the end of the year, reevaluated his position after the World Cup. This was mainly because of his commitments in the IPL and SA20. The report had added that these commitments made it untenable for him to continue through the Australia tour. Current Australian citizen Morkel was expected to oversee Pakistan's Australia tour but didn't.
