AFG vs NZ Test: Shahidi expresses disappointment over rain-affected match
Hashmatullah Shahidi, the captain of Afghanistan cricket team, has expressed his disappointment over the rain-affected one-off Test match against New Zealand. The match was scheduled to take place at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Stadium in Greater Noida, India. However, persistent rainfall and a damp outfield have resulted in the abandonment of play for four consecutive days. With more rain predicted on Friday, there are concerns about a potential total washout.
Shahidi laments uncontrollable factors affecting the match
In a conversation with Sportstar, Shahidi expressed his frustration over the uncontrollable factors affecting the match. He stated, "Neither the rain nor the ground management is in our control. The only controllable for us was to prepare for the game and that we did for the last 10 days." Despite being confined indoors due to rain, Shahidi has been utilizing his time effectively by training intensively at the gym.
Shahidi highlights importance of upcoming matches
Shahidi emphasized the significance of the match against New Zealand, stating, "I was excited for this game as this was an opportunity for us to see where we stand in terms of red-ball cricket." He also mentioned that Afghanistan has two more Test matches scheduled this year against Zimbabwe and potentially Bangladesh. The captain stressed on making the most out of these opportunities.
Shahidi encourages team to prove themselves on field
Shahidi is encouraging his team to demonstrate their skills on the field, not just in practice sessions. He believes that the upcoming Ahmad Shah Abdali First-Class tournament will provide an excellent platform for young players to gain experience and adapt to red-ball cricket. The tournament will feature four teams playing six games each, offering a chance for talent identification and improvement.
Shahidi's personal commitment to red-ball cricket
Shahidi, who has represented Afghanistan in eight Test matches, 78 ODIs and six T20Is over a decade-long career, finds great satisfaction in scoring runs in red-ball cricket. He stated, "I have a big responsibility on my shoulders as a captain in two formats." He further expressed his ambition to lead his team and country to new heights in Test cricket.
