Harmilan Bains contemplated suicide after missing Paris Olympics
Harmilan Bains, a double Asian Games medalist and middle-distance runner, has revealed her struggle with mental health issues following her inability to participate in the recent 2024 Paris Olympics. The 26-year-old athlete, who won two silver medals in the 800m and 1,500m events at last year's Asian Games in China, was sidelined this season due to injuries. These setbacks prevented her from pursuing a spot at the Paris Olympics.
Bains opens up about her mental health struggles
Bains expressed her deep disappointment and emotional turmoil following the missed opportunity to compete in the Paris Olympics. "I really wanted to be in the Paris Olympics and I gave my all. But there was injury after injury and that affected my performance," she told PTI. The athlete, also known as 'the queen' on social media, admitted that she even considered suicide during this difficult period.
Career uncertainty due to ongoing injury
Bains is currently dealing with a "Grade 2B" hamstring tear, which has cast a shadow over her future in athletics. She may require surgery for this condition, a decision that will be made soon. Earlier this year, Bains suffered an ankle injury (peroneal tendonitis) that took five weeks to heal. In June, she experienced a hamstring pull which worsened after participating in an event.
Bains's participation and performance in pre-Olympic events
Despite her injuries, Bains managed to compete in two events before the Olympics. However, she was unable to meet the Olympic qualifying standard in 1,500m or secure a place among the top 45 competitors for Paris through world ranking. In February, she triumphed in the 1,500m short track event at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Iran. On June 5, she secured second place in 1,500m at BMC Gold Standard Races in Birmingham with a time of 4:19.31.
Bains considers alternative career paths amid athletic uncertainty
As her athletic future remains uncertain, Bains is contemplating alternative career paths such as modeling. "I don't know what will happen but definitely my (athletics) future is uncertain," she stated. Known for her vibrant attire and distinctive hairstyle during races, Bains hinted at a potential shift in her professional life. "I am looking for another career option like modeling. I can't tell you much about this now but you will know soon," she added.
Bains' career achievements
In 2023, Bains secured silver in the 1500m at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou and at the Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, in both the 1500m and 800m events. In 2021, she set a new national record with a time of 4:05.39 in the 1500m at the National Open Championships in Warangal. She won gold in both distances at the Khelo India University Games in 2020 and a bronze in the 1500m at the Asian Junior Championships in 2016.
