Indian middle order batsman Suresh Raina celebrates his 33rd birthday on Wednesday. While he is famous for his hard-hitting batting, he is also known as one of the most athletic and acrobatic fielders in the history of Indian cricket. As the guy from Uttar Pradesh looks to revive his international cricketing career, we take a look at some of the records held by him.
First batsman to score T20I century batting at No. 3
Raina came up with a prolific century during India's ICC World T20 tie against South Africa in 2010. In the process, he became the first-ever centurion batting in the third spot in the format or the tournament itself. He scored 101 in the tie as India won by 14 runs. So far, 10 batsmen have scored a T20I century batting at this very spot.
First Indian to score 6,000 and 8,000 T20 runs
Raina was the first Indian o score both 6,000 and 8,000 runs in the T20 career. To date, Raina has scored 8,392 runs and is the third-highest Indian run-scorer in the format, after Virat Kohli (8,556) and Rohit Sharma (8,408). Raina achieved the feat by playing for sides like Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Gujarat Lions (GL), India and Uttar Pradesh.
First player to score 5,000 IPL runs
Raina was born for T20s as he continued his magical run in the format. This year, he became the first player to score 5,000 runs in the IPL. Currently, he is the second-highrst run-scorer in the tournament, having scored 5,368 runs in 189 innings. He is behind Kohli, who has scored 5,412 runs in 169 innings.
He holds most catches in the IPL
Known for his acrobatic fielding, Raina holds the record of claiming the most catches in the IPL. So far, Raina has claimed 102 catches in 192 innings, which included a maximum of three catches in a match. He is also the first fielder in the IPL to claim 100 catches. AB de Villiers is next to him with 84 catches in 121 matches.
Some other records held by him
As for some other records held by Raina: He is the first Indian to score a century in all three formats of the game. He is the only Indian to score a century in both limited-overs World Cup. He is the only player to score more than 400 runs in seven consecutive IPLs. He holds the record of most consecutive appearances for CSK: 158.
