Graeme Smith hopeful of South Africa's ICC trophy win
What's the story
Former South African cricket captain, Graeme Smith, has sounded optimistic about the country's chances of winning an International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy this year.
His remarks come ahead of the eight-team Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19, and the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June.
"Hopefully, we will end that wait much before the 2027 World Cup," Smith told PTI Bhasha.
Future plans
Smith envisions South Africa as 2027 World Cup favorites
Smith, who now serves as SA20 commissioner, detailed a three-year plan to improve South Africa's cricket infrastructure.
The aim is to make the country favorites when they host the 2027 World Cup.
"Over the next three years, we want to just keep pushing to improve our stadiums, pitches and our cricket ecosystem," he said.
Road to final
South Africa's journey to WTC final
Despite finishing as runners-up in both the men's and women's T20 World Cups in 2024, and losing to India in the ICC Women's Under-19 World Cup final earlier this year, South Africa stay hopeful.
The team will face Australia in their first-ever WTC final in June, after clinching their spot with a crucial win over Pakistan.
Dismissing claims of an easy run for South Africa, Smith said "There is no smooth journey in cricket today."
Cricket debate
Smith's views on 'country vs club' debate and Test cricket
Smith also weighed in on the ongoing "country vs club" debate, acknowledging the rapid rise of T20 cricket, but emphasizing the need for a "sustainable model" where all cricket boards collaborate.
"I want to see Test cricket stay stronger and if we can keep it strong with at least six or seven nations, that way Test cricket will stay strong," he said.
He also underscored the importance of scheduling, which ensures financial stability for the sport.
