SA20: Commissioner Graeme Smith highlights Dinesh Karthik's participation
Graeme Smith, the commissioner of South Africa's premier T20 league (SA20), has expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming third season. A notable feature of this season is the involvement of Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik, representing Paarl Royals. This marks a historic moment as it will be the first instance of an Indian participating in the tournament. Smith believes that Karthik's presence will enhance the league's international appeal and competitiveness.
Karthik to represent Paarl Royals
Karthik, the former Indian wicket-keeper, is set to join the Paarl Royals as an overseas player for the upcoming SA20 starting, January 9. This will be first time an Indian player will participate in the South African T20 league. Despite his retirement, Karthik remains active in cricket and was last seen playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2024 Indian Premier League season. He also retired from the IPL following the 2024 season.
Smith highlights SA20's goal of showcasing world-class talent
Smith underscored the league's objective to showcase world-class talent, citing marquee players like Ben Stokes, Kane Williamson, Jonny Bairstow, Devon Conway, and Rashid Khan among others. He expressed excitement about Karthik's inclusion and believes his presence will attract cricket fans worldwide. "You know he's come off a seriously successful IPL," Smith told Times of India. "And I know that along with the Ben Stokes and the Rashid Khans and all the other world-class players coming."
SA20 announces venues for this season's playoffs
Smith also revealed the venues for this impending season's playoffs, which will be held at St George's Park in Gqeberha, Centurion, and the Wanderers in Johannesburg. The final is set to be held on February 8 at the latter venue. The former South African skipper also emphasized the importance of rotating venues to provide diverse experiences and create opportunities for different stadiums.
