This is what Adam Gilchrist said about Steve Smith
Australian legend Adam Gilchrist has backed Steve Smith to return as the national team's captain in the future. Smith, alongside the duo of David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, were handed a ban by Cricket Australia for their involvement in a ball-tampering scandal against South Africa, earlier this year. This is what Gilly had to say about Smith.
Decoding the current situation of Steven Smith
Steven Smith was handed a ban of 12 months. He has another 5 months to go, before he can technically be included in the squad. Cricket Australia had made it clear that, although he will be welcomed to the side, he will not be able to captain the team for another 12 months. Smith could take over from current skipper Tim Paine in 2020.
Gilly feels Smith could script an amazing story of redemption
According to a report in Fox Sports, Gilchrist stated that, "I don't think it's out of the question that Steve Smith could possibly captain Australia again one day." He backed the Aussie star and said it would an amazing story of redemption. "He's young enough and if he wants to play long enough, there's every chance. Wouldn't that be an amazing story of redemption?"
Langer showed his support as well
Earlier, Australian coach Justin Langer showed his support. Langer had stated that the banned trio could make a return to the side, if they meet the standards of Australian cricket. Smith and Warner played their first games at home in September. Warner smashed a century for Randwick Petersham in Sydney Premier Cricket. Smith hit 85 for Sutherland in NSW Premier Cricket.
What have Smith and Warner been upto?
Since the ball-tampering scandal, Smith and Warner have featured in Canada Global T20 League and Caribbean Premier League. The pair cannot represent Australia, the state teams and the Big Bash League teams during this 12-month period. But they can play in other leagues. Smith is also set to feature in Pakistan Super League, whereas, David Warner declined the offer to play in Pakistan.
