Gavaskar urges MCC to include Dravid, Ponting in law-making process
What's the story
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has demanded former international players be inducted into the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the custodian of cricket's laws.
The suggestion came after India's captain Rohit Sharma was controversially dismissed during the second ODI against England at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
Gavaskar questioned the logic behind a recent MCC rule change that prevents non-strikers from retaining strike when a batsman is caught out.
Rule debate
Gavaskar questions MCC's decision to change crossing rule
Gavaskar voiced his concerns over the recent rule change while on commentary duty.
He said, "The laws are changed by MCC. At the moment, the laws are with the MCC." He added, "It's a private club that makes the laws of international games all over the world."
The former Indian captain asked if there was any reason to change this particular law in cricket.
Experience matters
Gavaskar calls for more international experience in MCC
Gavaskar also stressed on having international experience in the MCC.
He proposed that former captains such as Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting could be great assets to the committee.
"I do believe that there should be some international experience there," he said, adding that they have a lot of playing experience which could help in the law-making process in cricket.
Justification needed
Gavaskar highlights need for justification behind law changes
Gavaskar emphasized that any change in cricket laws should have a solid reason behind it.
He gave the examples of two bouners in an over or 90 overs in a day, which were implemented for a specific reason.
But he was unsure if there was a valid reason to alter the crossing rule in cricket.
