Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar supports 10-team World Cup
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has voiced out his support for a 10-nation ICC World Cup. In his column for Mid-Day, the Indian legend spoke highly about teams like Ireland and Scotland but stood firm on his stand of a 10 nation World Cup. The next edition of World Cup is scheduled to take place in England in 2019. Here's more!
Gavaskar wants associate nations to fight for a spot
"The point here is simple that if Ireland and Scotland were not good enough to qualify in an associate members event then how can they even think in terms of playing with the big boys in the World Cup?" Gavaskar said.
Gavaskar wants only top quality at World Cup
Gavaskar acknowledged Scotland's feat as they defeated England in an ODI. However, he still backed the ICC's decision of keeping the World Cup limited to only 10 teams. He believes that one good game does not make an associate nation a top team. He added if the number of participants in the World Cup is not restricted, the standard would take a beating.
West Indies and Afghanistan have qualified for the World Cup
The ICC World Cup Qualifiers were held earlier this March. Teams like Afghanistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Scotland, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong competed for the two available spots. Scotland were dealt a blow as they finished a point behind Afghanistan and West Indies, which made it to the 2019 ICC World Cup.
