Future of Gautam Gambhir's coaching staff following India's poor run
What's the story
The recent dismal show of the Indian cricket team has put the Gautam Gambhir-led support staff under the scanner.
This comes after the team suffered a string of poor results, including a 0-2 ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka and a historic 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand at home.
The team's woes were especially visible during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia Down Under.
Credibility questioned
Former cricketers question credibility of Gambhir's support staff
Former cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan recently questioned Gambhir's support staff in India's Test cricket woes.
In a recent review meeting, doubts were raised over assistant coaches Ryan Ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar, owing to their limited Test experience.
"Except bowling coach Morne Morkel, who comes with a body of work as a Test player, there is a growing opinion within the team set-up that assistant coaches Nayar and ten Doeschate are lacking in coaching expertise," reported Hindustan Times.
Coaching criticism
Gavaskar criticizes coaching staff for Kohli's struggles
Sunil Gavaskar slammed the coaching staff for failing to help Virat Kohli with his struggles against the outside-off delivery in Australia.
"I don't know about merit in having different coaches. That is something, you know, that we need to look at in a different scenario, not right now. But surely questions have to be asked of him (Gambhir) and his coaching staff," Gavaskar said.
Staff changes
BCCI considers changes to Gambhir's coaching staff
According to reports, the BCCI is contemplating changes in Gambhir's coaching staff in the coming months. A major decision is likely ahead of the five-match Test series against England.
"There is a possibility of more reinforcements in the coaching staff, those with technical expertise for the tour of England," Hindustan Times quoted.
Gambhir's coaching staff's future will likely depend on India's performance in next month's Champions Trophy.
New regulations
BCCI implements new rules for player travel and family visits
In wake of the team's poor performance, the BCCI has also introduced new rules for players' travel and family visits on tours.
Their wives and families are now barred from accompanying players on tours unless the tournament or the series is more than 45 days long. In that case, they can stay with the player for only 14 days. For shorter tours, it is seven days.
Further, players aren't allowed to travel separately from the team anymore.
Manager restrictions
BCCI restricts Gambhir's manager from team activities
The BCCI has also restricted Gautam Gambhir's manager, Gaurav Arora.
Arora, who has been accompanying Team India on tours, won't be allowed to stay in the same hotel as the Indian team or sit in VIP boxes at stadiums. He is also prohibited from using the team bus.
This move is unprecedented in Indian cricket and marks a major shift in BCCI's team management approach.
