Ganguly calls hiring Chappell the biggest mistake of his career
In his book "A Century Is Not Enough", former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly who is known to not mince words, spilled beans on various aspects of his career, including the infamous spat with Greg Chappell. Ganguly mentions how "hiring Chappell was the biggest mistake" of his career and that he hasn't interacted with him post-2007 World Cup. Here's more on what's in the memoir.
Ignored warnings, went with instincts in Chappell's case
Ganguly in his book writes that while he received warnings against hiring Chappell as the coach, from the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, he decided to ignore those and followed instincts. "But that's life. Some scripts go your way and some don't."
Sacking from captaincy "unacceptable and unforgivable"
The highly publicized infight between the former Indian coach Greg Chappell and Ganguly came to a head, when in September 2005, Chappell and the selection committee sacked Ganguly from captaincy and also dropped him from the squad. Recalling the incident, Ganguly says what happened was "unthinkable, unacceptable and unforgivable." "Suddenly from Maharaj I had joined the ranks of oppressed," he writes.
Not many players have compliments for Chappell, says Ganguly
There aren't many cricketers from Chappell era, who would complement the coach, Ganguly says. "Sachin doesn't have too many good things to say about him, does he?" he quips. Harbhajan in the past, during sacking episode, had publicly took Ganguly's side when he accused coach Greg Chappell of "instilling fear and insecurity" among players.
