5 instances where Ganguly showed his 'Dadagiri'
Sourav Ganguly is one of the pioneers of modern-day Indian cricket. He was bold and never scared to try something new. He built a team around rising cricketers and moulded them in match-winning superstars. Even post his retirement from the sport, he hasn't mellowed down. As Dada turns 46, we take a look at five incidents which show his 'Dadagiri'.
When he kept Steve Waugh waiting for the toss
The Australians were known for their nasty behaviour and during their 2001 tour of India, they got a taste of their own medicine. Australian captain Steve Waugh, who used to turn up late for every toss, was made to wait by Sourav Ganguly during their third ODI in Vizag. Dada recently admitted that "I was deliberately late for toss."
Dada's iconic visual of waving his jersey
If you are an Indian fan, then the visual of Dada waving his shirt on the balcony of the Lord's would be imbibed in your memory. India defeated England in the Natwest final, courtesy of Kaif's 87* and Sourav Ganguly celebrated it by removing his jersey and waving it in air. Ganguly regrets the act, but it was a message that India have arrived.
When he trolled the gentleman Rahul Dravid
Dravid and Ganguly got into a friendly banter during the England vs India series in 2014. Rahul took a dig at Ganguly's bowling skills "If Ganguly had been a yard quicker and just a little bit fitter, he would have been a match-winner." Dada responded quickly saying "I wish I was Prime Minister of India. I could have done a whole lot of things."
When Greg Chappell was reminded who is the boss
Former Indian coach Greg Chappell and Sourav Ganguly had a fallout in September 2005. Ganguly was dropped from the team post that incident. When asked, on air, if Chappell owed an apology to Indian cricket, Ganguly said "He can call up Tendulkar or Dravid. But he dare not dial my number. If he is hearing this on TV, he dare not call Sourav Ganguly."
When he stumped Boycott
Boycott: You must mention your experience about taking your jersey off and flying it in the air at the Mecca of Cricket; Lord's! Oh, you naughty boy! Ganguly: One of your boys also took off his jersey here in Mumbai. Boycott: Yeah, but Lord's is the Mecca of cricket. Ganguly: Lord's is your Mecca, and Wankhede is ours!
