Ranji Trophy: Gautam Gambhir steps down as Delhi captain
Veteran cricketer Gautam Gambhir has stepped down as the captain of Delhi. The 37-year-old has been replaced by Nitish Rana as the team's captain in Ranji. Gambhir decided to make way for someone younger at the top, as he wants to be in the background and help the team. It remains to be seen whether he plays all of Delhi's Ranji matches, this season.
Time for a change
Gambhir still essential for Delhi's chances
Gambhir is still key for this Delhi side especially with no Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan. The southpaw led the side to the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where they lost to Mumbai. He enjoyed in the national one-dayers and scored close to 500 runs. Although he might not be around for long, his contributions up till then will be key for Delhi.
Gambhir had given up captaincy of DD as well
Earlier this season, Gambhir had also given up his captaincy of Delhi Daredevils, after a poor start to the campaign. He didn't take part in the cash-rich league post six matches into the season. With Gambhir deciding to resign midway, it gave an opportunity for Mumbaikar Shreyas Iyer to take over as the skipper of Daredevils. DD finished at the bottom this term.
