French Open increases prize money, winner to pocket €2.2 million
The French Open has increased the cash prize for this year's tournament. The singles winner will take home €2.2 million, €100,000 more compared to last year. Tournament director Guy Forget made this announcement. The overall cash-prize has been increased by 10 percent to €39.2 million. However, even post this hike, the French Open will offer less money than the other 3 Grand Slams.
Even first round losers to make at least €40,000
The money for qualifying and first round losers has also been increased. The players crashing out of the tournament, in the opening round, would take home €40,000, which is €5,000 more than last year. The clay court Grand Slam will be played from May 27 to June 10 at the Roland Garros in Paris.
French Open still remains the least paying Grand Slam
The French Open might have increased its cash prize in its bid to stay on par with other Grand Slam tournaments, but it still offers the least prize money. The Australian Open Champion takes home €2.5 million while last year's Wimbledon winner Roger Federer pocketed €2.51 million and US Open champion Rafael Nadal won €3 million.
