French Open: Simona Halep wins her maiden Grand Slam
Simona Halep won her first French Open crown after defeating 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens. This was also her first Grand Slam. Halep's poor Slam final outings come to an end
This was 2nd Grand Slam final for Sloane. She had earlier pocketed the 2017 US Open. This was Halep's 2nd Slam final of 2018 and after losing the Australian Open, she has now come out on top in the French Open. It was her second final at Roland Garros and a fourth career final. Earlier, she had lost all three Slam finals.
Halep creates the force after going down
Stephens conquered the first set after going ahead 5-2, before Halep held on to her service. Stephens sealed the proceedings 6-3. In the 2nd set, the American put Halep on pressure after going 2-0 up. But the Romanian fought back and got four break points to make it 4-2. Stephens gained the momentum back and made it 4-4. But Halep held on to win.
Halep continues with the momentum
After sealing the 2nd set, Halep took the momentum in the third, as she went 3-0 ahead quickly. Stephens needed to show the fight, but Halep pulled out remarkable points from difficult situations and soared to a 6-1 win.
