Sinner coming off Australian Open title
Sinner claimed the 2024 Australian Open title after beating Daniil Medvedev in a high-voltage final. He scripted a comeback from two sets down and eventually won 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to lift his maiden Grand Slam trophy. Sinner became the first Italian man to win a major since Adriano Panatta in 1976. Overall, he was the third Italian man to win a major.
First eight major matches of a season
Sinner has now won eight successive Grand Slam matches in 2024. As per Opta, he is one of only four men to have now won their first eight singles major matches of the season before turning 23. Roger Federer (in 2004) Rafael Nadal (in 2006 and 2009), and Novak Djokovic (in 2008) are the only other players with this feat.
Sinner 29-2 in 2024
Ahead of the 2024 French Open, Sinner gave a walkover to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Madrid Masters quarter-finals. Besides claiming the Australian Open title, the Italian has won in Miami and Rotterdam this year. He is 29-2 in the season. Notably, Sinner will face Richard Gasquet in the second round at the ongoing French Open. The former is currently 12-4 at Roland Garros.
Sinner could displace Djokovic at top
It is worth noting that Sinner will become the new world number one if Djokovic does not reach the French Open semi-finals. He would become the first Italian and 29th overall player to unlock this achievement.
