Indian cricket's less familiar names
Indian cricket has seen many young players come and go. While some have made their mark, some have failed even after having a good record in the domestic circuit. Let us have a look at those who were part of India's Champions Trophy squad over the years, but failed to grab the attention of the fans.
An inconsistent pacer
Vinay Kumar was a part 2013 Champions Trophy squad, but he did not play a single match in the tournament. In the last couple of years, he has been ignored by national selectors although his performance in the domestic circuit has been commendable. He has led Karnataka to victories in Ranji, Vijay Hazare and Irani Cup for two consecutive seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Rohan Gavaskar
Rohan Gavaskar was a part of Indian team for the 2004 Champions Trophy. He played just one game, scoring 13 runs. While, he was not able to make a mark in international cricket, he has been moderately successful in first class cricket with 6938 runs.
The man who lost to fitness
A right-hand off-spinner, Ramesh Powar got a couple of chances in the national squad before losing his place in 2007 due to fitness issues. He played one match in the 2006 Champions Trophy and picked up three crucial wickets. Pawar was a handy batsman, who faced Akhtar and Sami fearlessly in his debut series. Known for his 'bowling sunglasses', he has 470 first-class wickets.
Jai Prakash Yadav
Jai Prakash Yadav was the only player in India's 2002 ICC Champions Trophy squad who did not get to play a single match in the tournament. After overcoming a tumor at an early age, Yadav played 12 ODIs for India.
One of 16 experimental wicket-keepers
Vijay Dahiya went on to play 19 ODIs for India while BCCI was trying to find a permanent wicket-keeper for team. In the 2000 Champions Trophy, he failed to impress, scoring just seven runs from three innings. A rather safe batsman, he was more successful in the domestic circuit and went on to become a successful coach of the Delhi Ranji team.
Sridharan Sriram
A dauntless all-rounder, Sridharan Sriram was a part of 2000 KnockOut Trophy. He was on bench for the whole tournament. Recently, he was hired as a spin consultant by the Australian team when they visited India.
