Presenting five-wicket hauls by Afghanistan pacers in ODIs
What's the story
Playing in their first-ever ICC Champions Trophy, Afghanistan secured a historic eight-run win against England in their second match.
The victory was powered by Ibrahim Zadran's 177 and Azmatullah Omarzai's brilliant five-wicket haul (5/58).
With this, Omarzai became only the third Afghan pacer to claim an ODI fifer.
Here, we look at all Afghanistan seamers who have taken five-wicket hauls in ODIs.
#1
Gulbadin Naib - 6/43 vs Ireland (Belfast, 2019)
Gulbadin Naib bagged figures worth 6/43 against Ireland in the 2019 Belfast ODI.
Defending a target of 306, Naib began his onslaught with the wicket of Paul Stirling (50).
He then demolished Ireland's batting lineup by dismissing Andy Balbirnie (20), Kevin O'Brien (12), Gary Wilson (34), and Tim Murtagh for a duck.
This saw the hosts fold for just 179, sealing Afghanistan's 126-run win
#2
Hamid Hassan - 5/45 vs UAE (Dubai, 2014)
In 2014, Hamid Hassan became the first Afghan seamer to claim a five-wicket haul in ODIs, accomplishing the feat versus UAE in Dubai.
His scalps included Saqib Ali, Krishna Chandran, Rohan Mustafa, Saqlain Haider, and Fahad Alhashmi, restricting UAE to 258/9.
However, three-wicket hauls from Kamran Shazad (3/45) and Mustafa (3/42) helped UAE bowl out Afghanistan for 228.
#3
Azmatullah Omarzai - 5/58 vs England (Lahore, 2025)
As mentioned, Omarzai starred in Afghanistan's aforementioned win over England at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.
Omarzai stunned the Englishman with a five-wicket haul, as they were bowled out for 317 while chasing 326.
He now has the best figures for Afghanistan in ICC ODI tournaments (5/58).
Omarzai dismissed Philip Salt early on before trapping key players like Jos Buttler, centurion Joe Root, and Jamie Overton.
