Brilliant France 'two' good for Uruguay
France thrashed lacklustre Uruguay 2-0 to reach the semis of the FIFA World Cup 2018. Antoine Griezmann played a hand in both goals as the 2016 Euro finalists marched on in style. Uruguay were without the services of Edinson Cavani and they failed to breach the French defense. France will now face either Brazil or Belgium in the last four battle.
Griezmann the architect of French victory
It was Raphael Varane, who scored the opening goal, after a free-kick by Antoine Griezmann. Griezmann, then, shot the ball on-target in the second half from 20 yards, only for Uruguay goal-keeper Muslera to fumble and concede second of the night. Uruguay didn't create much, but had one real opportunity with French custodian Lloris producing one of the best saves of this edition.
Suarez disappoints tonight
Luis Suarez had a disappointing game in the absence of strike-partner Edinson Cavani. The Barcelona forward did not produce a single touch in the opposition box for the first time in a World Cup. He also didn't manage to have a single shot towards goal.
Stat attack: Uruguay vs France
France became only the second team to beat three different South American countries in an edition of the World Cup after the Netherlands in 1974. Griezmann has scored seven goals in his last six knock-out games for France either in a World Cup or the Euros. Varane scored his third career goal for France with each of them coming from his head.
