FIA declares McLaren's rear wing legal after Red Bull's inquiry
The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), Formula 1's governing body, has declared that McLaren's rear wing complies with the rules. This announcement follows Red Bull Racing raising concerns about its legality. The controversy was sparked by television footage from the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix, which seemed to show a section of McLaren's rear wing flexing upward on the straight.
McLaren's rear wing passes all FIA tests
An FIA spokesperson confirmed that the McLaren car had successfully passed all tests related to bodywork flexibility and was in accordance with the rules. The spokesperson also stated that the FIA is "reviewing data and any additional evidence that has emerged from the Baku GP and considering any mitigating measures for future implementation." A representative from McLaren reiterated their car's legality within all deflection tests and compliance with regulations.
Piastri defends McLaren's competitiveness
Oscar Piastri, the McLaren driver who emerged victorious in Baku, defended his team's car. He stated: "It's legal. We get tested a lot and it passes. It is certainly not the magic ticket or bullet for why we're competitive. I am pretty happy with it." This statement comes amid ongoing championship rivalry between Red Bull's Max Verstappen and McLaren's Lando Norris, with Norris steadily closing in on Verstappen following a dip in Red Bull's performance.
FIA monitors bodywork flexibility amid Red Bull's concerns
The FIA stated it is closely monitoring bodywork flexibility on all cars and may request modifications at any time during the season. However, if a team passes all deflection tests and follows regulations and technical directives, they are considered fully compliant. The statement was issued as part of an ongoing debate about McLaren's rear wing, which Red Bull declined to comment on.
McLaren's stellar season so far
The team is currently the leader in the Constructors Championship standings with 476 points after Piastri's win and Norris's P4 finish in Baku. McLaren are now the Championship leaders for the first time since 2014. They are closely trailed by Red Bull in second position with 456 points. McLaren have had 14 podium finishes this season out of the 17 races. Their best finish this season came during the Hungarian GP with both drivers finishing P1 (Piastri) and P2 (Norris).
