Federer to make just one clay-court appearance in 2020
Swiss veteran ace Roger Federer has decided to make just a solitary clay-court appearance in 2020. The 20-time Grand Slam champion will make his only appearance on clay this season at Roland Garros. Federer, who has won the French Open just once in his career, will not feature in any clay tournaments in the build-up. Here's more.
Federer had skipped the clay-court season in 2017 and 2018
Federer had earlier skipped the entire clay-court season in 2017 and 2018. That was in view to keep up with fitness and giving his body a rest. Last year, he played only two tournaments on the surface before arriving in Paris for the French Open. This time around, Federer has decided to play just a solitary tournament as confirmed by his agent.
Federer bowed out of the semis in Australian Open 2020
Federer was eyeing for a 21st Slam honor at the Australian Open 2020. The Swiss maestro was beaten by eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. Federer lost the battle 6-7, 4-6, 3-6 in straight sets. After getting off to a strong start in Melbourne, Federer was tested in two five-setters in the third round and quarter-final respectively.
He plans on playing just Roland Garros. says Federer's agent
There was a speculation that Federer would include the Madrid and Rome Masters in his schedule for 2020 but his agent, Tony Godsick, said that isn't true. "As his schedule states, he plans on playing just Roland Garros," Godsick told Reuters.
Miami Masters will be Federer's final tourney before French Open
Federer will be fresh and well rested for this year's campaign at Roland Garros, which begins on May 24. His final tournament before the French Open will be the March 25-April 5 Miami Masters. Meanwhile, Federer will defend his title at the Dubai Duty Free tennis championships next week before playing at next month's BNP Paribas Open in California.
