Roger Federer's decision not to prioritize French Open explained
Roger Federer is indisputably the greatest legend of modern-day tennis, having won a record 20 Grand Slams to date. While he has made an impact in quite a few Grand Slams, he has a poor record at the French Open, winning just one title. Federer has revealed the reason as to why he does not prioritize the French Open.
Clay, his weakest platform; prefers to stay fit for grass
Having won just one career title at the Roland Garros, it is evident that Federer has not had much luck on clay. It has been the weakest platform in his entire career. Moreover, with the grass season to follow immediately, he prefers to keep himself fit for it. He is eyeing success in his most dominant platform that includes the Wimbledon.
Federer draws zero inspiration playing at Roland Garros
"Honestly, I asked myself: 'Do I still need this?' Training every day is not a problem, but in these conditions. Practicing in a bubble, it inspires zero," Federer was quoted as saying to Le Equipe.
Federer not a fan of playing conditions during French Open
Federer recalled an instance in 2017 when he was training in Paris, as it was snowing and was four degrees. He was forced to train below a bubble with Pierre-Hugues Herbert. "I want to play in the open air when the weather is nice, play games and there, I row to practice on the ground that I really did not enjoy," he further quoted.
Federer on his decision to skip 2018 French Open
"Last year, I wanted to make a break and it was my wife's birthday. I really wanted to celebrate and make time for friends, my wife, who has always supported me, and my children," he spoke on snubbing the tournament last year.
Federer has nothing else left to prove
As Federer prepares for the tournament starting next week, he is likely to be drawn in the same card as world number one Novak Djokovic and defending champion Rafael Nadal. However, speaking on his relaxed attitude for the tournament, the author feels that he has nothing else left to prove. Moreover, as he approaches his career end, he should only focus on his strengths.
