2018 FIFA World Cup has seen fans, from across the globe, making their way to Russia for the premier football tournament. A group of Switzerland fans got unlucky as they booked a hotel in the wrong city. The Swiss fans confused Rostov-on-Don, where Switzerland played Brazil, with Rostov Veliky, which is 1,281 km away from the venue.
Swiss fans get confused due to language barrier
"Foreign tourists who have come to support Switzerland called us and said they were looking for a hotel. Our translator told them they were confused in the difficulties of translating Russian geographical names and that they booked a hotel in Rostov Veliky." Russian Police said.
Russia has hired several translators to help fans
According to reports, in the Russian media, the fans called the police when they could not find their hotel. The police eventually helped them find an accommodation. Russia has hired several translators who speak Spanish, English, Arabic and French for the period of the World Cup. The job of these translators is to help lost fans find their accommodations.
Heavy security deployed near war zone areas
Concerns were also raised when Swiss fans travelled to Rostov-on-Don by car through eastern Ukraine. They did not know that they were travelling through a war zone as they followed their GPS. Rostov-on-Don is just 60 kilometres from eastern Ukraine. Heavy security measures have been taken by the Russian Government to ensure the safety of fans.
Switzerland fancy their chances to make it to next round
While booking a hotel in the wrong city might have been a heartbreak, Switzerland fans were definitely happy about their team's performance. They held favorites Brazil to a 1-1 draw. Switzerland fancy their chances of making it to the knock-out stage. They would be next seen in action against Serbia. Their last group-stage match is against Costa Rica.
