Basit Ali compares Babar Azam's popularity to Imran Khan
Pakistan cricket is currently experiencing a challenging period, marked by a historic home series defeat against Bangladesh and early exits from the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup. Amid this turmoil, Babar Azam, a key figure in Pakistan's cricketing landscape, has been the focal point of criticism. Despite his recent lackluster performance, former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali has drawn parallels between Azam and Imran Khan, widely regarded as Pakistan's most successful captain.
Ali highlights Azam's media presence
In a YouTube video, Ali emphasized Azam's consistent media presence despite his current form. He stated, "Babar Azam hasn't been scoring runs. However, even if he is walking somewhere, the video of that is everywhere on the television." Ali further highlighted that Azam's popularity surpasses all other players in Pakistan as every move he makes is broadcasted on TV.
Imran Khan: A cricketing legend
Imran Khan is recognized as one of cricket's finest all-rounders. He has an impressive record of 3,807 runs and 362 wickets in 88 Test matches, along with 3,709 runs and 182 wickets in ODIs. Khan's leadership skills are particularly revered as he guided Pakistan to their sole ODI World Cup victory in 1992. He is also the former Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Azam's recent form raises concerns
Azam's recent performance in the Test series against Bangladesh was disappointing, with a total of just 64 runs from four innings. This included his first-ever duck in a home Test match. His leadership during Pakistan's unsuccessful campaigns in the ODI World Cup 2023 and T20 World Cup 2024 has also come under scrutiny. He is hence likely to lose the captaincy in both white-ball formats.
