Dan Evans makes history at the US Open: Details here
British tennis star Dan Evans set a record by winning the longest match ever in the professional era of the US Open. He beat Russia's Karen Khachanov in five sets (5 hours, 35 minutes). The match surpassed the previous record set in 1992 when Stefan Edberg of Sweden defeated American Michael Chang in the semi-finals, after a grueling five hours and 26 minutes. Evans rallied from 0-4 in the deciding set to eliminate Khachanov 6-7(6), 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4.
Evans' resilience and determination comes through
The match was so long that Evans had to keep checking the scoreboard to keep track of the set he was playing in. "When you're a kid, you're just told to fight until the end. That's rule one," said Evans. "I've consistently done that throughout my career, and it paid off today." Despite Khachanov leading 4-0 in the final set, Evans saved four break points before converting a break point opportunity himself.
Evans clinches victory with an unreturnable forehand
The crowd erupted when Evans saved another break point and cheered loudly as Khachanov lost his serve. Despite Khachanov's relentless fight and saving two match points in the final game, Evans secured victory with an unreturnable forehand after a 22-shot rally. The 34-year-old expressed his pride in the victory stating, "I'm immensely proud."
Summary of the longest US Open match and H2H record
Khachanov hit 79 winners, against Evans' 53. While Evans converted 8/18 break points, Khachanov converted 8/23 break points. In one of the most hard-fought matches, the British player won 201 total points, as compared to the Russian's 191 points. The 34-year-old had a 73% first win and 54% second serve win. Both players served a total of 14 aces throughout the match. With this win, Evans now leads Khachanov 5-0 in terms of head-to-head on the ATP Tour.
