What is going wrong with Manchester City in Premier League?
Premier League champions Manchester City suffered their second defeat in a space of five days to go seven points behind leaders Liverpool. After Liverpool thrashed Newcastle United 4-0, all eyes were on City and how they would respond. And Pep Guardiola's side were beaten by hosts Leicester City 2-1 on the night. City are third now with Tottenham Hotspur sitting on second spot.
City's defensive structure shaken
City's defense is at fault for their poor performance. They have conceded five goals in the previous two matches. For a side that hardly sets a foot wrong, the structure has suddenly been shaken. They gave space to Jamie Vardy for Leicester's equalizer. The moment Leicester arrived in City's box, it led to a goal. Against Palace, they had faced similar issues.
City haven't been able to react swiftly to advancements
In both the matches, City took the lead but surprisingly allowed their opponents to make a comeback quickly. The timing of the equalizers shows that City haven't been able to react swiftly to advancements. Jeffrey Schlupp scored within six minutes at the Etihad and now Marc Albrighton netted after just five minutes post Bernardo Silva's opener. This has been a major problem.
Individual show by players has made life difficult
Crystal Palace's Andros Townsend scored one of the best goals this season with a superb volley from 30 meters to beat City goal-keeper Ederson. Townsend stated that it was the best goal of his career. This time it was Ricardo Pereira, who blasted in a winner from the edge of the penalty area in the 81st minute. City gave away possession from weak headers.
Next few games key for City
The gap has widened now and Liverpool are playing beautiful football at the moment. City cannot afford more results like these. Pep will need to rally his side and get them performing once again. Adopting simple strategy will be key for City.
