However, we have witnessed a fascinating season of football with plenty on offer. According to WhoScored, there are some pretty surprising stats that cropped up this season. We take a look.
Defenders Jones and Luiz surprised the fans
Manchester United defender Phil Jones may have not been impressive this season, but the England international boasts of a pass percentage of 93.10. When compared to other players that have played at least 10 EPL matches this season, only John Stones has a better pass completion rate (94.2%). Meanwhile, Chelsea defender David Luiz holds the most number of through balls this season (12).
Kante excels on a different area of the pitch
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri came in this season and changed the role of N'Golo Kante. Known as one of the best ball-winning mid-fielders in the defensive half, Kante has excelled yet again, but on a different area of the pitch (final third). The Frenchman has won possession in the final third 35 times this season so far. Only Mohamed Salah (37) has been better.
David de Gea surprises one and all
David de Gea is having a difficult campaign. In 2017-18, he did not commit a single mistake that led directly to a goal. Notably, this season he has committed errors on four occasions. The Spaniard has kept only seven clean sheets this season as compared to 18 in 2017-18. His last clean sheet- a goalless draw with Liverpool came back in February.
Pogba jumps from 51st to 2nd with this feat
Last season, Paul Pogba had 76 shots to his name in the league. Although, only 18 of them were on target. He ranked 51st in terms of most shots on target. Pogba has increased his tally of shots on target to a whopping 49 this season. Mohamed Salah is the only player above him on the list. That's a jump of 49 places.
