Hosts England overcame Australia in the fifth Ashes 2019 Test at The Oval. This helped the hosts draw the series at 2-2. Although Australia will keep the urn, the series result will boost England as they continued to have a strong summer post the 2019 World Cup win. Aussies failed to chase down a target of 399. Here are the records that were broken.
How did the 5th Test pan out?
England scored 294 in the first innings after a brilliant counter attack by Jos Buttler (70). Mitchell Marsh claimed a fifer on return. Australia were dismissed for 225 with only Steve Smith scoring a defiant 80. Jofra Archer claimed six scalps to do the damage. England amassed 313 runs in the second innings dominate the show. However, Matthew Wade's ton wasn't enough for Australia.
Cummins ends with 29 wickets, surpasses 50 in Ashes career
Pat Cummins ended the series with the highest wickets (29). He extended his tally to 43 Test wickets in 2019. That's the highest by any bowler. Cummins, who picked up five scalps at The Oval, surpassed the 50-wicket mark in his Ashes career (52).
Broad registers a host of records
Stuart Broad claimed four wickets in the fifth Test to register 23 scalps in Ashes 2019. He extended his career Test wickets tally to 467. The veteran Englishman is also the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Ashes history after racing to 118 scalps. Broad went past former Aussie greats Ray Lindwall and Monty Noble in terms of career Ashes scalps.
Smith registers these special feats
Smith ended his Ashes 2019 journey with a staggering 774 runs. With a score of 80 in the first innings, Smith became the first batsman to register 10 consecutive 50+ scores in a row against an opponent in Test history. He also joined an unique list to score 700+ runs in a series batting in six or fewer innings.

Smith got scores of 239, 76, 102*, 83, 144, 142, 92, 211, 82, 80 and 25 in his last 11 Ashes innings. With his 80 in the first innings, he amassed 1,251 runs in 10 consecutive Ashes innings from 2017-19. He surpassed the mark of Sir Donald Bradman 1,236 runs (1937-1946). Smith became the seventh batsman to score 2,800 career Ashes runs.
Warner scripts this unwanted record
David Warner endured the worst moment in his Test career after scoring 95 runs across 10 innings at 9.50. The Aussie southpaw scored eight single-digit scores in the series 2, 8, 3, 5, 61, 0, 0, 0, 5, and 11. He became the first ever opener to get out for eight single-digit scores in a Test series. Broad dismissed him seven times.
Impressive feats registered by England batsmen
England opener Joe Denly (94) amassed his highest career Test score. Ben Stokes (67) scored his second fifty in Ashes 2019 and a 19th career one as well. Joe Root (57) became third youngest to score 7,000 career Test runs (28 years, 256 days). He became the 12th English batsman to surpass the 7,000-run mark in Tests.
Wade smashes fourth career Test ton
Matthew Wade scored a fighting century for Australia in the second innings. This was his second hundred in Ashes 2019 and his fourth career one in Test cricket. He also scored over 300 runs in Ashes 2019.
