England beat Ireland in one-off ODI: Here're the records broken
England clinched a narrow four-wicket victory over Ireland in the one-off ODI at Malahide. The win for England will give them confidence ahead of the five-match ODI series against Pakistan starting Wednesday. Batting first, Ireland posted a paltry 198 in 43.1 overs. England lost their way, before Tom Curran and Ben Foakes rescued the side. Here's more.
England continue to dominate ODI circuit
This was Ireland's seventh loss against England in eight ODIs. Their only victory came during the dramatic World Cup group game in 2011. This was England's seventh ODI series win since the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017. Their only loss came against Scotland in an one-off ODI match in 2018. This was also England's 24th ODI victory out of 31 ODIs since Champions Trophy.
Some crucial records for England players
Liam Plunkett (4/35) now has 120 career ODI scalps. He is now the seventh highest wicket-taker for England after surpassing Chris Woakes (116). Foakes smashed an unbeaten 61 on ODI debut. Tom Curran (47*) registered his highest score in ODI cricket. Eoin Morgan registered his 15th career ODI duck. He equalled a host of players including Saeed Anwar, Steve Waugh and Kumar Sangakkara.
Ireland's Stirling goes past 3,500 ODI runs and other feats
Ireland's Paul Stirling (33) went past the 3,500-run mark in ODIs (3,569). He hit five fours in the match. Stirling now has 396 ODI fours to his name and needs four more to equal the mark of 400. Josh Little took an outstanding 4/45 on debut. Tim Murtagh (1/29) now has 63 ODI scalps. He equalled former Irish bowler Alex Cusack.
How did the match pan out?
Ireland got off to a steady start with both their experienced openers adding 55 runs for the first wicket. The hosts lost their way, after being reduced to 111/6. Debutant Mark Adair (32) helped Ireland amass 198. In reply, England were under pressure from the start and were reduced to 101/6. But a 98-run stand between Curran and Foakes bailed them out.
