UEFA Nations League: Dominic Solanke headlines England squad
Dominic Solanke, the Tottenham striker, has been selected for the England squad by interim manager Lee Carsley. This marks his first call-up since 2017 when he made a substitute appearance against Brazil while playing for Liverpool. The selection comes ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and Finland. "Dom's a player I'm fully aware of, having worked with him in the past," Carsley stated about Solanke's inclusion. Here's more.
Carsley praises Solanke's performance and potential
Carsley praised Solanke for his impressive performances at Bournemouth and Tottenham. He revealed that the striker was considered for the previous squad but was sidelined due to an injury. "He did so well at Bournemouth and now he's taken that form into Spurs," Carsley said. "He's got a lot of really good attributes that I really like, as well as being a really nice person."
Walker and Bellingham return to England squad
Kyle Walker has been recalled to the England squad after being omitted from Carsley's first selection. The 34-year-old defender played every minute of England's games in Germany over the summer. Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham, who missed September's fixtures due to an injury, is also back in the squad following his recovery. "He's a player we're looking forward to having back," Carsley said about Walker's return.
Maguire and Rashford miss out on England selection
Harry Maguire, the Manchester United defender who was a regular under former manager Gareth Southgate, has been excluded from Carsley's squad due to a calf injury. "Harry [Maguire] is a player I've worked with in the past," Carsley said. "He's been very positive in the conversation we've had." Marcus Rashford also missed out on selection for England. His last cap came in a 1-0 defeat to Brazil in March 2024.
