3rd ODI: England beat New Zealand in a thriller
Talk about a nail-biter and the 3rd ODI between New Zealand and England had all on offer. Having won the toss, the Kiwis put the visitors to bat first. A brilliant bowling performance from Ish Sodhi saw England bundled out for 234 but an unbeaten hundred from captain Kane Williamson was not enough to take the Blackcaps to victory. Here's our match report.
Sodhi's brilliance restricts England to 234
England were off to a bad start losing Roy, Root and Bairstow by the 17th over leaving them reeling at 68/3. However, captain Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes held on, but Ish Sodhi struck and a flurry of wickets saw England being bowled out for 234 in the final ball of their innings. Morgan was the top scorer with 48 to his name.
Batting collapse lets New Zealand down
In reply, New Zealand were off to a great start. Despite losing Guptill early, Munro and Williamson looked at ease. However in the 18th over, Rashid struck to send Munro back to the pavilion and that led to a batting collapse. From 80/2, New Zealand found themselves at 103 for 6 and now were staring at a defeat.
Williamson's hundred goes in vain
Just when all hopes were fading away, Mitchell Santner and Kane Williamson stitched a 96 run partnership for the 7th wicket with Williamson scoring his 11th ODI century and Santner scoring a brilliant 41 before being dismissed. The match was poised for a last ball finish but Williamson couldn't find the finish, and England won by 4 runs.
Williamson reached 5,000 run landmark
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is now the 5th fastest to 5,000 ODI runs. The 27-year-old achieved the feat in 119 innings. South Africa's Hashim Amla leads the charts with 101 innings followed by Viv Richards and Virat Kohli, both of them achieved it in 114 innings. Brian Lara reached the milestone in 118 innings.
Williamson scores his 28th international hundred
Kane Williamson is now second on the list for most international 100s for New Zealand. The Blackcaps skipper scored his 28th international hundred and is only behind Ross Taylor, who has 35 to his name.
