Australia vs England 2nd ODI: Records broken
Australia might have rolled over England in the Ashes Test series, but the Three Lions are a completely different opposition in the 50-over format of the game. The visitors claimed their second ODI victory of the series beating the hosts by 4 wickets in the second ODI at Brisbane. England now lead the 5 match series 2-0. Here are records broken in the match.
England have found their mojo
Australia opted to bat first after winning the toss. Aaron Finch hit 106, his 10th ODI century to give the hosts a good start. However, a flurry of wickets in the last 10 wickets ensured Australia could just post 270 on board. England made light work of the chase beating the hosts by 4 wickets with 34 balls to spare.
Australia are struggling to cope up with England
This is the second biggest successful chase against Australia at the Gabba . The biggest was in 1997, when West Indies chased down 282 against the hosts. Before this game, Australia boasted a 9-1 win record at the Gabba in ODIs since 2010, their best at any venue. Their only defeat came in the hands of Sri Lanka back in 2013.
Australia threw away the game
Australia's poor finish to their innings, after a fantastic start laid by Finch, cost them the match. Australia scored 62 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the last 11 overs. They were 208 for the loss of three after 39 overs. Finch has taken 83 innings to reach 10 ODI hundreds, which is 5th fastest among all batsmen and fastest among Australians.
Australia are getting it all wrong
For the first time in 5 years, Australia have lost consecutive ODI matches at home. The last time, they lost consecutive matches was back in 2013 to Sri Lanka in January. This is also just the third time that Australia have lost first two matches of an ODI at home. Australia have never won a 5 match ODI series after going down 2-0.
Finch's heroics go in vain
Five out of 10 Finch's centuries in ODI cricket, have come in the losing cause for Australia which is the most by any Aussie player. He shares the record with former captain, Ricky Ponting who has 29 ODI centuries. Finch's batting average of 116.70 while scoring a century is the lowest among 25 opening batsmen with 10 or more ODI hundreds to their names.
England on a roll, Australia in crisis
Five wickets taken by England spinners is the joint most wickets taken by the spinners in an ODI innings at the Gabba. Since 2017, England are on a roll having won 16 of their last 18 ODIs. While Australia are having a torrid time and have now lost 9 out of the past 10 ODIs.
