Haryana: Hockey star Jyoti Gupta found dead on railway tracks
Twenty-year-old national women's hockey player Jyoti Gupta, widely hailed as an emerging star, was found dead on railway tracks in Haryana's Rewari in the evening of August 2. Prima facie it appeared to be a case of suicide, police said. According to the train driver involved, she had "suddenly appeared" before the train. Reportedly, she had last spoken to her family 1.5 hours before.
What happened?
According to the driver of the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express, the train was crossing the Jhajjar Road overbridge when it hit Jyoti; she was standing alone near the truck but suddenly came in front of it. "He said he tried to pull the brakes" but the train couldn't stop in time, said Ranveer Singh, SHO. Government Railway Police later retrieved the body.
Tracing Jyoti's last day
That day, she had left her home in Sonepat at 11am. She said she was going to Maharishi Dayanand University to get her college documents corrected. In the evening, she talked to her mother and said she would be late as her bus had stopped. The family found out about her death when around 10:30pm, her mother called her and a GRP official answered.
Jyoti had represented India at various tournaments
Jyoti had represented India in the South Asian Games in 2016 as well as last year's Five-Nation international Junior hockey tournament in Valencia. In May, she had played in the All India Universities team in the Senior National Hockey Championships (A Division) at Rohtak. Jyoti had attended a three-month national coaching camp at Himachal Pradesh in June, and was scheduled to attend another in August.
