Ben Duckett clarifies remarks on Yashasvi Jaiswal's attacking approach
England cricketer Ben Duckett has cleared the air on his previous comments regarding Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal's attacking batting. During the India-England five-Test series earlier this year, Jaiswal scored a staggering 712 runs, breaking a plethora of records. He bashed the England bowlers all around the ground. This performance led to Duckett suggesting that Jaiswal's aggressive batting was influenced by England's 'Bazball' approach. However, these remarks were met with criticism as some felt they undermined Jaiswal's individual talent.
Duckett's initial comments on Jaiswal
Duckett initially stated, "When you see players from the opposition playing like that, it almost feels like we should take some credit that they're playing differently than how other people play Test cricket." The England opener, who is a byproduct of England's Bazball era, received flak for this statement. This led to a debate about the influence of England's aggressive approach on other teams' strategies.
Duckett clarifies his comments on Jaiswal's style
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Duckett has clarified his earlier remarks. He stated that his comments were meant as a "compliment" for Jaiswal's incredible talent, not an assertion of influence. "It was actually me paying him (Jaiswal) a nice compliment. I'm pretty sure I said he was a world-class player, but no one spoke about that," Duckett explained.
England's Bazball era!
England have been a formidable force in Tests ever since Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes took over as the head coach and captain, respectively. The dynamic pair has so far helped England record series win over several tough opponents. McCullum's Bazball ploy has helped England come out of their traditional batting method. Notably, Bazball is not just restricted to their batting in Test cricket. The other aspects such as field placements and bowling changes also reflect the same.
Records scripted by Jaiswal in England Test series
Jaiswal broke several records in the five-match Test series against England at home. The hosts won by a 4-1 margin. The young opener finished as the highest run-scorer and was the Player of the Series. Jaiswal became the second Indian batter to slam 700 runs in a bilateral Test series, joining the great Sunil Gavaskar. Jaiswal also became the second-fastest Indian batter to complete 1,000 Test runs (16 innings). He displaced Cheteshwar Pujara as the second-fastest Indian to the mark.
