Lalita Babar in 3000m steeplechase finals
Lalita Babar became first Indian woman to qualify for the finals of track events after 32 years at Olympics. She was through to the finals of women's 3000m steeplechase after she finished fourth in the qualifying. Lalita set a new national record after finishing the race in 9 minutes 19.7 seconds. Sudha Singh, however failed to qualify after a poor run.
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa exit Rio winless
Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa lost their third and the last group match to exit the Rio Olympics without registering even a single win. The Indian pair went down to Thai pair Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai 17-21, 15-21. They earlier had lost against Japanese pair in the first match and to Dutch pair in the second.
Gurpreet and Mairaj fail to make it to semi-finals
Indian shooters Gurpreet Singh and Mairaj Ahmed failed to reach the semi-finals in their respective events losing in qualifying rounds. Gurpret finished seventh in men's 25m rapid fire pistol event, where the top six qualified for the next round. After jumping to fifth position in men's skeet qualifications, Mairaj slipped to ninth at the end of the round, thus exiting from the Olympics.
Indian women suffer a humiliating defeat
Indian women's hockey team ended their Olympic run on a losing note after they were handed defeat from the Argentine team. India lost 0-5, finishing last in their group. India has one draw and four loses in their five group matches. The women's team had qualified for Olympics after 36 years. Indian men's team will face Belgium in their quarter final match on Sunday.
Indian pair loses to US, will fight for bronze
Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza lost to the United States pair of Rajeev Ram and Venus Williams in the semi finals of mixed doubles. After winning the first set 6-2, India lost the second set 2-6. The US pair won the game in tie breaker 10-3. They will now play for the bronze medal.
Michael Phelps wins 23rd gold; US their 1000th
United States swimmer Michael Phelps created history when he won his 23rd gold medal in the Olympics. At the same time the United States have won their 1000th gold medal after they won gold in the women's 4x100m relay race.
Dutee Chand finishes seventh; does not qualify for semis
In women's 100m event, India's Dutee Chand finished seventh in her heat and 50th overall which meant that she was not eligible for the semi-finals.
