Sangakkara lauds Dinesh Karthik's inclusion in Paarl Royals for SA20
Kumar Sangakkara, the Director of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals, has expressed his enthusiasm over Dinesh Karthik joining the Paarl Royals squad. He described Karthik as one of the finest finishers in cricket today. Sangakkara believes that Karthik's experience and dynamic playing style will be a significant asset to the team in the upcoming SA20 season.
Karthik's journey to SA20
Karthik was recruited by Paarl Royals as a star overseas player in August, ahead of the SA20 auction on October 2. This move marks him as the first Indian cricketer to participate in the SA20, scheduled from January 9 to February 8, 2025. His inclusion is expected to bolster the Royals's performance, particularly in light of England white-ball captain Jos Buttler's withdrawal from the 2025 edition.
Sangakkara on Karthik and Root's roles
Following the SA20 auction, Sangakkara expressed confidence that the addition of Karthik and Joe Root would help offset Buttler's absence. He praised Root for his experience, knowledge, and team spirit. Sangakkara also highlighted Karthik's skills at the end of an innings, labeling him as "explosive" and "one of the best finishers in T20 cricket worldwide." He believes that these two players will provide a better balance to the team.
Karthik's retirement and IPL legacy
Karthik announced his retirement from representative cricket after playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024. As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India's rules, only retired cricketers are permitted to participate in overseas T20 leagues. Throughout his IPL career, Karthik proved himself as one of the most accomplished wicketkeeper-batters, scoring 4,842 runs including 22 fifties.
Paarl Royals' aspirations for upcoming SA20 season
Despite reaching the playoffs in the first two editions of the SA20, Paarl Royals have yet to secure a title. Sangakkara remains optimistic about their chances in the upcoming season with a more balanced squad. He emphasized the importance of players stepping up in crucial moments and executing skills under pressure, citing these factors as key to winning the tournament.
