Devon Conway ends dry patch in Tests with fiery half-century
New Zealand opener Devon Conway has finally brought an end to his dry run in Test cricket as he made a fiery 61 in the third innings of the ongoing second and final Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The southpaw played with remarkable intent and scored his first Test fifty in over 500 days. Here we present his stats.
A fine hand from Conway
NZ, who had a deficit of 514 runs, were off to a poor start yet again as opener Tom Latham for a duck. However, Conway joined forces with Kane Williamson (46) and the duo added 97 runs for the second wicket. The former's intent got everyone talking as he brilliantly tackled the in-form Lankan spinners. He eventually fell to opposition skipper Dhananjaya de Silva.
Conway ends the drought
Conway made 61 off 62 balls, having smoked 10 fours and a six. As per ESPNcricinfo, his last 50+ score in Tests came back in March 2023 against Sri Lanka in Wellington. With this knock, he has raced to 1,588 runs across 22 Tests at 39.70 (50s: 9, 100s: 4). 204 of his runs have come versus SL at 29.14.
How has the match proceeded?
Sri Lanka had three centurions in the form of Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, and Kusal Mendis in their first innings score of 602/5d. NZ were asked to follow on as they managed just 88/10 in their first outing. Mitchell Santner (29) was the only one from his team to score over 15. Conway and Williamson batted well in NZ's second outing.
