Delhi Capitals's co-owner reveals retention strategy for IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals's co-owner Parth Jindal has revealed the franchise's retention strategy ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. He confirmed that team captain Rishabh Pant is set to be retained. The announcement follows the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) recent disclosure of rules for the upcoming auction, which allows franchises to retain up to six players using the Right-To-Match option.
Jindal discusses potential player retentions
Jindal further discussed the potential retention of other players in a video shared by IANS on X, formerly Twitter. "We also have Axar Patel, who is excellent, Tristan Stubbs, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Kuldeep Yadav, Abishek Porel, Mukesh Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed," he said. However, he did not mention Australian cricketer David Warner in his list of potential retentions for the upcoming season.
BCCI's new retention rules favor uncapped players
The BCCI's new retention rules state that any player who has not represented India in the past five years will be considered 'uncapped.' These players can be retained at a significantly lower cost, potentially as low as ₹4 crore. This change is particularly beneficial for teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who may use this rule to retain former captain MS Dhoni while preserving a capped player option.
IPL regulations allow retention of 5 capped players
As per the IPL Player Regulations, a franchise can retain up to five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players. This can be done either via retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option. Despite finishing sixth in the previous season and failing to reach the playoffs, Delhi Capitals had several standout young performers such as Abishek Porel, Tristan Stubbs, and Jake Fraser-McGurk.
